Nobody pays to get listed
Tools don’t pay for placement, and they can’t pay to rank higher. Every tool goes through the same review before it’s added, and its position on the site comes from its category, its rank, or the leaderboard, never from a sponsorship.
How the ranking works
Every tool gets a quality rank from 1 to 10. A 10 is reserved for tools that are genuinely iconic in their category; 5 is the default starting point for anything new. That rank decides how tools sort within a category and which ones show up in a profession’s top picks. The leaderboard works on a similar idea at a larger scale, ranking tools by real-world usefulness rather than marketing spend.
What “hand-picked” actually means
A tool has to work, do what it claims, and be worth someone’s time before it goes on the site. Dead links, broken demos, and thin wrappers around someone else’s API get rejected, even if they’re trending somewhere else.
Why open source matters here
Every category, every tool, and every ranking rule lives in a public repository. Anyone can check the data, question a placement, or send a pull request to fix something that looks off. That’s a different kind of accountability than a typical “best of” list gets, where the ranking logic usually just lives in someone’s head. Read more about the mechanics in How the Site Works.
