Instead of browsing by category, you can browse by role: photographer, lawyer, recruiter, and dozens more. Each profession page pulls in every tool from the categories relevant to that job.

How a tool lands there

A tool doesn’t get manually placed on a profession page. It’s a byproduct of its category. Every profession lists the categories it cares about, and any tool in one of those categories shows up automatically. Add a tool to the “video editing” category, and it appears on every profession page that includes video editing, no extra step needed.

What “alternatives” means here

Every tool page can list a handful of alternatives: other tools that solve the same problem in a similar way. Best of AI turns that list into a dedicated page at /alternatives/<tool>/, so if you’re looking at a website builder, you can immediately see similar options next to it.

How a tool becomes a listed alternative

Alternatives are picked by category and use case, not by brand size. A tool only gets listed as an alternative to another if it genuinely competes for the same job. A note-taking app doesn’t belong next to a video editor just because both happen to use AI.

What’s on a company page

Each company page profiles one AI lab or company: founding year, headquarters, founders, and a grid of every tool on the site that it built. A tool links to its company through a single field in its own file, the same way it links to a category.

Missing a company, or something’s wrong?

If a company isn’t listed yet, or its details are out of date, open an issue or a pull request on GitHub. Add the company’s file, then set the company: field on the tool’s own file to match.

Nobody pays to get listed

Tools don’t pay for placement, and they can’t pay to rank higher. Every tool goes through the same review before it’s added, and its position on the site comes from its category, its rank, or the leaderboard, never from a sponsorship.

How the ranking works

Every tool gets a quality rank from 1 to 10. A 10 is reserved for tools that are genuinely iconic in their category; 5 is the default starting point for anything new. That rank decides how tools sort within a category and which ones show up in a profession’s top picks. The leaderboard works on a similar idea at a larger scale, ranking tools by real-world usefulness rather than marketing spend.

What’s covered

The hardware section lists GPUs and AI accelerators: the chips people actually buy or rent to train and run models. Each entry carries the specs that matter for that decision, including VRAM, memory bandwidth, clock speeds, TFLOPs, and price.

Why it’s here

Best of AI isn’t only about apps you click into. Plenty of visitors are trying to decide what hardware to buy before they touch a model at all, so this section covers that decision directly.

No database, just files

Every tool is a Markdown file in content/tools/. Every category lives in data/categories.yaml. There’s no admin panel and no backend to manage; the entire site is flat files in a Git repository. The whole thing builds with Hugo, a static site generator, into plain HTML.

What GitHub Actions handles

Three workflows do the boring parts:

Deploy builds and publishes the site on every push to main.
Issue to PR reviews tool-submission issues automatically and opens a pull request for anything that fits the format.
Update README regenerates README.md whenever tool data changes.

Why it’s built this way

Flat files mean anyone can clone the repository and see exactly what’s on the site and why. There’s no hidden database to trust; the data is the same file you’d edit to fix it.

There’s a dedicated page for this: Submit Your AI Tool. It covers what to include, how long review takes, what happens after approval, and why a submission might get turned down.

The short version

Fill in the form with your tool’s name, website, and a description. A person reviews it, usually within a few days. Once it’s approved, it shows up on your category page, any profession pages it fits, alternative comparison pages, and the homepage’s recently-added list. There’s no fee, and no limit on resubmitting if it’s rejected the first time.

What’s covered

The models section catalogs AI models directly, language models, image models, and beyond, separate from the tools and products built using them. Models are grouped into their own categories, the same way tools are grouped by category.

How it’s different from the tools directory

A tool is something you use. A model is what powers it. ChatGPT the product is a tool; GPT is a model. Best of AI tracks both, but keeps them in separate sections because they answer different questions: what should I use, versus what’s actually running underneath it.

The short version

Best of AI is a directory of AI tools worth using. Every entry gets checked by a person before it goes live. Nothing pays to get in, and nothing pays to rank higher.

Why it exists

Most “AI tool lists” online are copy-pasted from each other, full of dead links, with half the entries being thin wrappers around someone else’s API. Best of AI is built and maintained by Dariush Abbasi, who wanted a list he could actually trust rather than one built to sell placement. The project runs on open source values: the data is public, the code is public, and anyone can check a listing or send a fix.
