ERNIE 4.0 is the large language model Baidu introduced in October 2023 as the engine behind its Ernie Bot chatbot, positioned at the time as Baidu’s answer to GPT-4. Baidu never disclosed its parameter count or training details, keeping it a closed, proprietary model accessible only through Baidu Cloud’s API and the Ernie Bot app rather than as downloadable weights. It handles Chinese and English text generation, reasoning, and multi-turn conversation, and Baidu later added a “Turbo” variant that improved speed and cost. ERNIE 4.0 has since been superseded by ERNIE 4.5, which Baidu released as an open-weight model family in 2025, and by ERNIE 5.0.
