FLUX.1 Kontext is Black Forest Labs’ image editing model, announced on May 29, 2025 as an extension of the base FLUX line into instruction-based editing. Instead of only generating images from text, Kontext takes both a text instruction and a reference image, then applies targeted edits, such as changing an object, adjusting lighting, or transforming part of a scene, while keeping the rest of the image and the subject’s identity consistent. Black Forest Labs released it in multiple tiers: a closed Pro version and a faster Max version accessible through its API and partners like fal.ai, plus an open-weight Kontext dev model with 12 billion parameters that Hugging Face users can run themselves under a non-commercial license. The company markets its inference speed as up to eight times faster than comparable editing models at the time of release. Kontext competes directly with instruction-based editing features in Google’s Gemini image models and OpenAI’s image tools, an area that saw heavy competition through 2025.
