Gemini 1.0 Ultra
Google's first Gemini-generation flagship, launched at the start of 2024
Gemini 1.0 Ultra is the flagship model from Google’s original Gemini lineup, announced December 6, 2023 and made available to Gemini Advanced subscribers in early 2024. It was Google’s first model built from the start to handle text, images, audio, and video together rather than bolting vision onto a text model after the fact. At launch, Google reported an MMLU score of 90.0% using a chain-of-thought prompting method, which it said was the first time a model had beaten human-expert performance on that benchmark, while its standard 5-shot MMLU score was closer to 83.7%.
Ultra ran only through Google’s own products and API, first inside Gemini Advanced and the Vertex AI platform, at a monthly subscription price for consumers. It set the ceiling for what the Gemini brand could do for about two months before Google shipped Gemini 1.5 Pro, which matched or beat Ultra on many tasks while adding a much longer context window, and Ultra was gradually phased out of Google’s product lineup over 2024.
