The 2023 release that reset expectations for what LLMs could do
GPT-4 is OpenAI’s large language model launched on March 14, 2023, roughly four months after ChatGPT put the company on the map. It was the first GPT model to accept image input alongside text, and it passed a simulated bar exam near the 90th percentile, a result OpenAI used to argue the model had moved past the pattern-matching feel of GPT-3.5. The initial release shipped with an 8K token context window, with a 32K version available to select API customers. GPT-4 held OpenAI’s flagship spot for over a year, until GPT-4o replaced it in May 2024 with faster, cheaper, natively multimodal generation. It is still available through the API and ChatGPT today, mostly for backward compatibility, though OpenAI has pointed developers toward GPT-4.1 and later models for new projects.
