OpenAI's full-duplex voice model that listens and speaks at the same time
GPT-Live-1 is OpenAI’s full-duplex voice model, launched July 8, 2026 ahead of the broader GPT-5.6 rollout. Unlike earlier voice modes that wait for a clear pause before responding, it listens and speaks at the same time, so users can interrupt, ask it to slow down, or tell it to stay quiet while they think without breaking the conversation. It ships in two sizes: the scaled-down GPT-Live-1 mini powers ChatGPT’s free tier, while the full GPT-Live-1 is the default on the Go, Plus, and Pro plans. There’s no separate voice subscription or per-message charge, and it hands off harder questions to GPT-5.5 behind the scenes before bringing the answer back into the conversation. OpenAI has said a developer-facing API version is coming but has not yet published pricing or a release date for it.
