HyperCLOVA X
Naver's flagship model tuned for Korean language and culture
HyperCLOVA X is Naver’s flagship large language model, unveiled in August 2023 as South Korea’s answer to GPT-4 and one of the first major foundation models trained with a heavy emphasis on Korean language and cultural context rather than English-first data. Naver has said the model runs on roughly 204 billion parameters, more than GPT-3’s 175 billion, though the company has since focused on making later variants smaller and more efficient rather than simply larger. It powers Naver’s CLOVA X chat assistant and is available to businesses through Naver Cloud’s API, where it competes with global models on Korean-specific tasks like local search, e-commerce, and customer service where dialect, honorifics, and cultural references matter. Naver has followed the original release with specialized variants, including HyperCLOVA X Vision for image understanding and HyperCLOVA X THINK, a reasoning-focused version with an expanded context window. The strategy reflects a broader pattern of national or regional players building models tuned to a specific language market rather than competing head-on with OpenAI or Google on general capability alone.
