Ideogram 1.0

Ideogram 1.0 is the debut text-to-image model from Ideogram, a startup founded by ex-Google Brain researchers, released in February 2024 alongside an $80 million Series A round. Its standout feature at launch was legible in-image text: at the time, most diffusion models scrambled letters and words badly enough that adding readable text to a generated image was mostly a losing bet. Ideogram claimed roughly half the text-rendering error rate of competing models on its own evaluations, which made the model useful for things earlier tools struggled with, like posters, T-shirt designs, memes, and logos with real words in them. The model also shipped with Magic Prompt, a built-in prompt-expansion feature that fleshes out short user inputs into more detailed prompts before generation. Ideogram has since moved past 1.0 with 2.0 and 3.0 releases that pushed further on photorealism and typography, but 1.0 is the release that established text rendering as the company’s core differentiator against Midjourney and DALL-E.
