Inflection-1

Inflection-1 is the founding model built by Inflection AI, the company started by Mustafa Suleyman, Reid Hoffman, and Karén Simonyan. It launched in mid-2023 as the engine behind Pi, a conversational assistant designed around a supportive, personal tone rather than task completion or coding. Inflection AI trained the model on a large cluster of Nvidia H100 GPUs and positioned it as competitive with GPT-3.5 and Google’s PaLM 2-Large on standard academic benchmarks, though the company never disclosed its parameter count.

Unlike OpenAI or Anthropic, Inflection didn’t sell API access to Inflection-1 at launch. The model existed to serve Pi directly, reflecting the company’s early bet that a consumer chat product, not a developer platform, was the better business. Inflection-1 was superseded within months by Inflection-2 and then Inflection-2.5, which closed much of the quality gap with GPT-4 while using a fraction of the training compute.
