Affinity
Canva's free design app for photo editing, vector art, and layout
Affinity grew from a set of three separate apps: Photo, Designer, and Publisher. These are now combined in a single application, so a designer can retouch an image, draw vector artwork, and lay out a page without switching programs. It’s non-destructive, supports layers and masks, and opens common files including PSD and AI. It became popular as an alternative to Adobe software for people who disliked subscriptions.
Canva acquired the Affinity company and now offers the unified app for free to individuals, with the option to connect to Canva for sharing and collaboration. Organizations that need features like single sign-on can arrange enterprise or education plans. AI tools are optional and tied to a Canva premium plan, so users who prefer to avoid AI can skip them. Integration lets you send designs to Canva and bring them back.
Affinity is more capable than Canva’s browser editor for detailed illustration, print layout, and photo work, but it has a smaller community and fewer tutorials than Adobe’s apps. Some Photoshop and Illustrator features, plugin ecosystems, and collaboration workflows are not matched. Alternatives include Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, Inkscape, GIMP, and Krita. Affinity suits freelancers and hobbyists who want professional tools without a subscription.
