arXiv

Authors upload papers, and readers can search, download, and set up alerts. Cornell University operates it. Most papers in physics and math appear there first.

Papers are not peer reviewed by arXiv itself, so quality varies.

bioRxiv and SSRN serve other fields. arXiv suits physicists and mathematicians.
