Azure AI Vision gives developers pretrained image analysis. The Image Analysis service can describe an image in a sentence, tag objects and scenes, detect people and objects with locations, and extract printed and handwritten text through OCR. Additional capabilities include background removal, smart cropping, and searching images by meaning, using models that understand both text and images.

Video and spatial analysis features can analyze camera feeds to count people and measure how they move through physical spaces, useful in retail and building management. Face-related features exist but are limited by a responsible AI approval process, since facial recognition has privacy and fairness concerns. Customers can also train custom models for their own image categories, and containers allow running some features on the edge.

Pricing is per transaction with a free tier, and capabilities have been consolidated and renamed over time as Microsoft’s AI services evolve, so documentation can differ from older tutorials. Accuracy varies by image type. Alternatives include Google Cloud Vision, Amazon Rekognition, Clarifai, and open models run through Hugging Face. Azure AI Vision suits teams on Azure adding image understanding to applications.
