Basecamp takes a different approach from most project tools. Each project is a self-contained workspace with sections for to-dos, a message board for announcements and discussions, a shared schedule, documents and files, and a group chat called Campfire. Instead of dozens of views and customization options, it offers a fixed, simple structure that’s easy to learn, and encourages asynchronous communication over constant meetings.

The company that makes it, 37signals, is outspoken about its philosophy: calm, focused work and fewer meetings. Features like automatic check-ins replace status meetings, Hill Charts show progress visually, and notifications are designed to be quiet by default. Clients can be invited into projects, which makes it popular with agencies and small businesses.

Basecamp is paid, with a flat per-company price in some plans instead of per-user fees, and a free trial. It lacks advanced features such as dependencies, detailed reporting, and extensive automation, which can limit it for complex projects, and it has not emphasized AI. Asana, Trello, ClickUp, Notion, and Linear offer more features. Basecamp suits small teams and agencies who prefer simplicity and predictable costs.
