BigQuery lets teams analyze huge amounts of data without managing servers. You load data from files, databases, streams, or other Google services, write SQL, and BigQuery spreads the work across many machines and returns results quickly, whether the table holds millions or trillions of rows. Because storage and compute are separated and managed, there is no cluster to size or tune, which is a big reason analytics teams like it.

It has added many features for modern data and AI work. BigQuery ML lets analysts train and run models, including forecasting and classification, with SQL statements, and connect to Gemini and other models to generate text or embeddings from within queries. Vector search supports similarity and retrieval workloads. Gemini in BigQuery helps write and explain SQL, generate code, and suggest data transformations. It also connects with Looker, Connected Sheets, and third-party BI tools.

Pricing has two models: on-demand charges based on the amount of data a query scans, and capacity pricing for reserved compute, plus storage fees. There is a monthly free allowance. It is easy to run an expensive query by accident if tables are large and unpartitioned, so cost controls matter. Snowflake and Databricks are the main competitors, Amazon Redshift is AWS’s equivalent, and DuckDB covers smaller local analysis. BigQuery fits teams already using Google Cloud.
