Blender is a complete 3D program that costs nothing. It handles modeling and sculpting, rigging and animation, physics simulation, rendering, compositing, and basic video editing in one application. It is used for animated films, game assets, product visualization, architectural renders, and motion graphics. The software is released under the GPL and developed in public by the Blender Foundation and a worldwide community, with funding from donations and corporate sponsors.

Two features define the current Blender. Cycles is a path-tracing renderer that produces photorealistic images, and EEVEE is a real-time engine for quick previews and stylized work. Geometry Nodes lets you build procedural models and effects by connecting nodes rather than editing meshes by hand, which has become popular for environments and motion design. The Grease Pencil tool allows 2D drawing and animation inside the 3D space.

AI shows up mainly through add-ons rather than the core program. Community and commercial plugins generate textures and materials from text, create rough 3D models from images, assist with rigging and retopology, and connect to external AI services. Quality varies, and many of them need an outside account or a powerful GPU. Blender itself has a steep learning curve, but there are many free tutorials. Maya, Cinema 4D, and 3ds Max are paid industry alternatives, and Blender’s open model has pulled it into many professional studios.
