CARTO focuses on location data at scale. Instead of copying data to a separate tool, it works where the data already lives, using the warehouse’s compute. Analysts can run spatial operations such as joins, clustering, and routing, and build interactive maps that stay connected to live data.

The platform has three common uses. Analysts build maps and dashboards to explore patterns, data teams construct workflows with a visual editor for spatial processing, and developers embed maps and analytics into applications through APIs. Datasets for demographics, points of interest, and mobility are available to enrich internal data. AI agents let users ask spatial questions in natural language.

CARTO is sold to enterprises on subscription, with a free trial for testing. It requires a modern data warehouse and some familiarity with spatial data. Alternatives include Esri ArcGIS, Mapbox, Google Earth Engine, Foursquare Studio, QGIS as open source, and Kepler.gl. CARTO suits retail, logistics, telecom, and insurance teams with large location datasets.
