Clio is a practice management system for small and mid-sized law firms. It keeps matters, contacts, documents, calendars, and communications in one place, tracks billable time, produces invoices, and takes payments through trust accounting and online billing. Client intake tools capture new inquiries and conflict checks, and a client portal lets clients view documents and messages securely. For many firms, it replaces a patchwork of spreadsheets and separate apps.

The AI assistant, Clio Duo, helps with the paperwork. It can summarize a matter’s documents and emails, answer questions about a case, draft correspondence, and suggest time entries. Clio has also moved into legal research and drafting by acquiring a legal research company, adding tools to find authorities and prepare documents inside the same environment. These tools aim to reduce the time lawyers spend on administrative work and first drafts.

Clio is sold by monthly subscription per user in tiers, and add-ons such as payments and intake cost extra. Law firms must handle confidential client data with care, so they should review how AI features treat information and what the vendor promises about training. AI-drafted text and citations must be checked by a lawyer. Competitors include MyCase, PracticePanther, Smokeball, and Filevine, and larger firms often use enterprise systems built for bigger practices.
