Users record tracks, plan routes, and layer maps such as satellite imagery, slope angle, and weather. The paid plans include more map sources and offline use. It runs on phones and in a browser, and routes sync between them.

Outdoor guides, hunters, and search and rescue volunteers use it to plan trips and share routes. A phone battery is still a risk, so many users carry a backup map or battery pack.

CalTopo and OnX are close alternatives, and AllTrails is simpler. Gaia GPS suits people who spend time far from roads.
