Gemini Code Assist
Google's AI coding assistant for IDEs and the command line
Gemini Code Assist brings Google’s models into the developer’s editor. In VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, it suggests code as you type, answers questions in chat, explains and refactors code, generates tests, and helps fix errors. It can take a larger task and make coordinated changes across files in agent mode. Google also offers a command-line version, Gemini CLI, which many developers use directly in the terminal.
For organizations, enterprise editions add code customization, which lets the assistant take into account a company’s private repositories so its suggestions follow internal libraries and styles, as well as security and compliance features, indemnification, and admin controls. It works with Google Cloud tools such as Cloud Shell, Firebase, and BigQuery, and it can review pull requests on GitHub through a companion app.
The individual tier is free with generous limits, which makes it easy to try, and enterprise plans are billed per user. Google changes its AI product names often, so the details may shift between Gemini Code Assist, Gemini CLI, Jules, and related products. Quality is competitive with the leading assistants, and its very large context window is a strength on big codebases. GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, and Amazon Q Developer are the main alternatives.
