Google Cloud Text-to-Speech
Google's API for natural-sounding speech in 50+ languages
Google Cloud Text-to-Speech gives developers speech synthesis built on the technology behind Google’s assistants. A request with text returns audio in formats like MP3 or WAV, with a choice of voices and languages. The newer voice families, such as WaveNet and the Chirp generation, sound much more natural than traditional synthetic voices, and there are many accents and genders to choose from.
Developers can fine-tune delivery with SSML, adding pauses, emphasis, pronunciation, and speed. The service supports long audio synthesis for audiobooks and narration, and streaming for real-time applications such as voice assistants and interactive voice response systems. Customers can request a custom voice trained on their own recordings, with strict requirements, and the service integrates with other Google Cloud tools.
Pricing is per character with different rates for voice types, and a free monthly allowance. Quality is strong for utility uses, though the voices are less expressive than those of specialists like ElevenLabs. Alternatives include Amazon Polly, Azure AI Speech, OpenAI’s text-to-speech, ElevenLabs, and Cartesia. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech suits applications already on Google Cloud that need scalable, dependable speech.
