Instead of editing a model by hand, you build a network of nodes that describes how it is made. Change one input and the whole result updates, which makes it easy to produce variations or redo a shot after a director changes their mind. Its simulation tools for fluids, particles, cloth, and rigid bodies are a main reason studios adopt it.

Film VFX teams, game studios, and motion designers use it, and it connects to engines such as Unreal and Unity through plugins. The learning curve is long, since you need to think in networks rather than in tools.

SideFX sells commercial licenses and offers a free version with some limits for learning and personal projects. Blender geometry nodes cover part of the same ground. Houdini suits technical artists and VFX teams.
