Protégé is the AI layer of LexisNexis’s legal research platform. Lawyers can ask research questions in plain language and receive answers that cite cases, statutes, and secondary sources from the LexisNexis collection, with links to the underlying authorities. It can summarize documents, compare them, extract key terms, and draft memos and clauses, and it connects with the Shepard’s citation service to help check whether authorities are still good law.
Newer versions emphasize agentic work and the lawyer’s workflow. Protégé can break a task into steps, such as gathering documents, researching issues, and producing a draft, and works in Microsoft Word so suggestions appear in the document being edited. Firms can customize it with their own documents and playbooks, and security terms are designed for confidential client information.
Protégé is sold as part of LexisNexis subscriptions on custom pricing, to law firms, corporate legal departments, and government. Because it draws from curated legal content, it aims to reduce the risk of made-up citations, but lawyers must still verify everything before relying on it. Competitors include Thomson Reuters CoCounsel and Westlaw, Harvey, Legora, Spellbook, and vLex’s Vincent AI. Protégé suits legal professionals already using Lexis.
