Splunk made machine data searchable. It ingests logs, metrics, and events from servers, applications, networks, and cloud services, indexes them, and lets users search and visualize with its Search Processing Language. Companies use it to troubleshoot outages, monitor performance, and investigate security incidents, and it has been a mainstay of security operations centers for many years.

The product line includes Splunk Enterprise and Splunk Cloud for core analytics, Enterprise Security as a SIEM for threat detection, and observability tools for infrastructure and application monitoring. AI features include an assistant that helps write searches from plain language and summarizes findings, and machine learning for anomaly detection. Cisco acquired Splunk and is integrating it with its networking and security products.

Splunk is sold by data volume or workload-based licensing and has a reputation for high cost as data volumes grow. It’s powerful but needs skill to run well. Competitors include Elastic, Datadog, Microsoft Sentinel, Google Chronicle, and Sumo Logic, along with open-source stacks built on Grafana and OpenTelemetry. Splunk suits large organizations with significant security and operations needs.
