Streamlit is built for data scientists who want to share work without learning web development. You write a Python script and add calls like text input, sliders, charts, and buttons, and Streamlit produces an interactive web app that reruns the script when the user changes something. This model is simple enough that people can make an app in minutes, and it has become a standard for internal tools and demos.

The library has grown with the AI wave. It has chat components for building conversational interfaces on top of language models, caching and session state for managing data, and support for common visualization libraries such as Altair, Plotly, and Matplotlib. Streamlit Community Cloud hosts public apps for free, and companies deploy apps on their own infrastructure or in Snowflake, which acquired Streamlit and integrates it with its data platform.

Streamlit is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license. Its rerun-the-script design makes it easy but limits complex, highly custom interfaces, and large apps can be slow without careful caching. Gradio is the closest competitor for machine learning demos, Dash and Panel serve dashboard builders, NiceGUI and Reflex offer more web-like control, and Jupyter notebooks remain popular for exploration. Streamlit suits data teams who want quick, shareable apps.
