As AI agents begin to shop and pay on behalf of people, merchants and payment systems need a way to handle it. Stripe’s suite helps businesses become discoverable to agents: a merchant uploads a product catalog, chooses which agent platforms to sell through, and Stripe handles discovery, checkout, and payments.

It builds on open protocols. The Agentic Commerce Protocol, developed with OpenAI, defines how an agent and a merchant negotiate a checkout. The Machine Payments Protocol, written with Tempo, lets agents and services coordinate payments in code, including small recurring transactions. Stripe also supports an agent wallet and stablecoin payments over the x402 protocol, and it issues limited-use tokens so an agent can spend within set limits.

Parts of the suite are in preview, and available features vary by country. The market is early, and the amount of real spending by agents is small compared with traditional e-commerce. Merchants should consider fraud, refunds, and liability when agents buy. Alternatives include PayPal’s agent tools, Visa Intelligent Commerce, Mastercard Agent Pay, Coinbase’s x402, and Adyen. Stripe’s suite suits online businesses preparing for agent-driven sales.
