WordPress is the software behind a large share of the web. You install it on a web host or sign up with a hosted service, and manage pages, posts, media, and users from a dashboard. A block editor lets you build layouts visually, and thousands of themes control how a site looks. Plugins extend it for SEO, contact forms, memberships, caching, analytics, and online stores through WooCommerce.

It comes in two forms that are easy to confuse. WordPress.org is the free software you host yourself, which gives full control and requires handling hosting, updates, and security. WordPress.com is a hosted service from Automattic with plans that handle those chores. AI arrives mostly through add-ons: Jetpack and other plugins offer writing help, image generation, and chat assistants, and AI site builders can generate a first draft of a site from a prompt. The core project is also adding building blocks for AI features.

WordPress itself costs nothing, but a real site pays for hosting, a domain, and often premium themes or plugins. The freedom to customize is the main attraction, along with a huge community and many developers. The tradeoffs are maintenance and security: outdated plugins are a common source of hacks, and poorly chosen ones slow a site down. Wix and Squarespace are easier all-in-one builders, Webflow targets designers, and Ghost fits publishers.
